Robot Debation

Robots are bad for society

For:
Robots are bad for society for many reasons, I mean, look at The Terminator, do you want a war, man against crazy killer robots that can disguise themselves as humans? We all will die!

Also, when you think about it, robots are taking over more and more of people's jobs as technology gets more advanced. And if you have lost your job, well, they're not exactly gonna pay ya if you don't do anything anymore. Buying the robots may cost a bit, but they don't need to be paid, so in the long term, they are going to be saving a lot of coin.

Nowadays, people can use lots of different kinds of robots for lots of different kinds of entertainment. Regular animals could eventually be replaced by robotic pets, and the animals wouldn't be needed, and may even die out.

Robots are good for society

Robots are awesome for society! Imagine waking up, asking your personal robot butler for breakfast in bed. You wouldn't have to move a muscle, while breakfast is delivered to you. Going to a hotel, and being welcomed by a bored manager with a forced smile, well problem gone. Please welcome, the one and only ASIMO!

Tired of being burnt, and risking death everyday because you have to try out new military clothing? Bring in Petman! Your problem will be immediately solved by this high-tech robot, that can even  artificially sweat.

Robots can go loads of places that humans can't, I mean, look at curiosity, it's on mars!

Aibo the Robot Dog

Aibo stands for Artificial Intelligence Robot. He is a 25-cm toy robot made by the Sony Corporation in Japan, and was made to act like a dog. When you first start him off, he acts like a puppy, and goes around exploring.

There are lots of other companies competing to create robotic pets, such as the robot dog Genibo QD, made by the Korean company Dasatech. QD greatly resembles Aibo. He was made to resemble a bull terrier. Genibo can share emotions with his owner, and he uses a camera and sensors to 'see'.

When his battery is low, he finds the nearest electricity outlet and ‘sleeps' while his battery is charging. It learns to recognise it’s owner, like a real dog would, and even starts to learn commands, like ‘sit’, and ‘roll over’. It acts like it is happy when you play with it, and acts sad and whimpers when there is no-one to play with.

Aibo can also learn to do things that normally dogs wouldn't be able to, like dance in time to music, and play soccer.

It is slightly bad that Aibo has been created, because as he gets cheaper and gains more popularity (as he almost certainly will), people will want to buy him instead of buying a real dog. Maybe people will even stop buying real dogs at all eventually, and what a real dog would do could be forgotten.

Auckland Kids Marathon

On Sunday the 28th of October, there was the Auckland Kids Marathon. All the kids did a run that was approximately two kilometres and 195 centimetres. We had to attach a timing chip to our shoes so our times could be recorded, but at the end, once we finished we had to give it back or we would be charged a $25 dollar fine. All of the VAS Kids competed together, the school zones tops. My marathon number was 28746. At the end we were given water and a small cup of Powerade. In the I do not know what place I came yet, but I do not expect much seeing as I was racing 10, 11, 12 and 13-year-olds, and there were also kids I was up against like Flynn. The race was very tiring, and I had to have a three hour sleep after, but I still can't wait 'till next year to do it again!

The New iPad Mini

The new iPad Mini has been created and will be on sale in New Zealand from Friday the second of November. It's screen is roughly two thirds of a normal iPad's, and weighs 0.31 kilograms, half as much as a regular one would weigh. It is also about as thin as a pencil. The iPad is not just smaller, but is designed in a completely different way. It's price is starting off at $479.00, which is about half the price of a third generation iPad. The new fourth generation iPad will have a better camera and will work on more wireless data networks around the world. So remember folks, the iPad Mini will soon be in stores, find at your local Apple store from November the second!

Felix Baumgarter Jumps From Space

On the 14th of October, 43-year-old Austrian Felix Baumgarter thrashed the world record for the highest jump ever, jumping from space! From a height of 128,097 feet (39,044 metres), he went at a speed of 1342 kilometres per hour and came back down to earth within 4 minutes and 19 seconds. At the last minute, he was nearly forced to abort because of a helmet problem. He was supposed to jump at 120,000 feet, but the helium balloon that took him up went 8,097 metres higher, so he was jumping from more than 24 miles up. The balloon that lifted him into space held 859,000 cubic metres of helium, imagine what would happen if you sucked on that, you would probably sound like a chipmunk for life!

Avenger

He was gone for. My friend had a bullet through his heart, and had lost much of his blood. The tears rolled down his cheeks, why did he have to go so soon? As I listened to his last words, I knew he wasn’t going to come back. “Avenge me.” His eyes closed.

I was armed and dangerous. Ready to avenge. My new name: The Avenger! Gun, check. Ammunition, check. My hunt finally ended at an alleyway. Huh. Too easy. I had the gun, and he had nothing, not even a way out. As he scrambled backwards, as he begged me for forgiveness, well, I didn’t listen. I only had one thing on my mind. Revenge. As I aimed the gun, he cried out. “Please don’t kill me, I won’t do it again!”
“No.” I said. “You won’t.” BANG.

The bullet ricocheted of the concrete and lodged itself in a lamppost. I could not do it. I walked away silent, and I realised how I could see him again. I raised the gun, and fired. The police later found an 11 year old boy, lying on the ground with a smile and glazed eyes, with a bullet in his head. That boy saw his friend in heaven.

Assasins

The soldiers had returned from a war, with all of them harmed, but all still alive. As they walked, they had a sadness in their eyes, like they had seen something they didn't ever want to see, would try to forget, but in their hearts they knew they would never be able to. But they were still all excited to be home at last. Then suddenly, something whizzed past them. One soldier slumped to the floor, never to wake up again. Then the grenade went off. All were killed but 9. Those 9 opened fire on the masked, murderous assassins coming to bring them to their doom. Later, they were all defeated, and died warriors deaths, fighting for life. They were buried, with loved ones in tears, and were only ever seen again in imagination.

Bullet

Here it was: a showoff, a fight to the finish, two men, two guns, one bullet each. Mexican showdown. Who first, I wonder. What the heck, I might as well finish him off, he had taken a bullet to the stomach, good shoulder and through his thigh. I was luckier, I just had a bullet nick the tip of my toe. I raised the gun. BANG! But not my gun. With a shock, I realised that there was a sickening hole in my chest. As I felt my life slipping away, I raised the gun and fired at his heart. He slumped over, defeated and dead. “Sweet dreams.” I said, and fell to the ground.

Nuke

I was carrying a Nuclear Time Bomb, trying to get in the safe house where it would do no damage. 20 seconds! I sprinted to the place, 12 metres to go! 19 seconds, 18, 17, then suddenly I tripped. NOOOOOOOOOO! I must catch it, lightly, so I do not destroy the world! Yes, I caught it! 10, 9, 8, 7, come on! I was too far away, I would have to throw it, but one millimetre off and I would kill every human alive! As I threw it, the bomb exploded, but yes, it got there in time, the humans were safe! But unfortunately, later I found out that my muscle was torn, and would be inactive for the rest of my life.

Zombie

I crept up the stairs, escaping the noise down below. There was something strange, something was wrong. He heaved a door open, only to find more sets of stairs, leading who knows where. In the distance, I could hear something moving. I tip-toed up the nearest staircase, through the door, and little did I know, my doom. A slimy, rotten hand reached out and clamped on my face, eliminating any chance of a scream.

The Shark

As a shark came rushing towards me, I swam for my life! If I could just get to the boat, I would be abled to race out, away from danger. The only problem was that it was at least 100m away. The dark, murky water was no help either. I was going to have to rely n my last piece of adrenalin, my only hope. I frantically kicked toward the boat, which would only confirm the shark attacking. Would I make it? Oh no! A riptide! Wait a minute, yes! I went rushing, with the luck of the devil, towards the boat, but the shark was still gaining. Almost there... Yes! I scrambled up onto the jet-boat, but something was not right right, I didn't feel whole. The blood was seeping, and it was all I could do to pull the lever and motor away. I could feel my life ebbing away, and I slowly closed my eyes.

My family

My family is a bit weird sometimes, but who's isn't. The family I live with is quite big, I have got my mum, dad, two brothers and two sisters. My parents probably will get angry at me if I tell you their age, but I am sure that I CAN tell you that they are, for me, the best parents I could ever wish for. They love us all equally, and they are both really good cooks, ESPECIALLY my mum. She makes dazzling deserts and to-die-for dinners. Now I'll tell you about my psychotic siblings. My sisters are named Kasia and Sarah, Kasia being 8 years, 3 months 3 weeks and six days. Sarah is the youngest, at the age of 1 year, 10 months, 3 weeks and 6 days. And then there are my brothers, the craziest of the lot, Jackson and Cooper. Jackson, the Violent One, is 6 years, 11 months, 3 weeks and 5 days. Now Cooper, smart as a boulder, and about as crazy as a man that's been given an electric shock and then had his backside set on fire. He is 4 years, and turning 5 on December the 14th. He will have to start school in Year 1. Sometimes everyone can be a bit strange, but really, I love my family!

Daniel Bell

Daniel Bell is a major inspiration to me, he always trys his best and is rewarded with good results. He even got into the Olympics, wow, isn't,t that amazing! We have a bit in common, because we both have Backstroke as our best stroke, and I wish I could tell him that I am almost, if not the best, at 100m IM (individual medley), and I'm now moving on to try 200m IM. I wish I could see him again and congratulate him on passing the trials and getting into the Olympics. He is so awesome and inspiring, I just want to be like him when I get older. I have the time of 1 minute 31 secs for 100m Backstroke, and I can't quite remember my new 100m IM time. In my last meet I false started in 100 IM, but I didn't let it get me down, and the ref even gave another chance, as long as I swam alone. And then I turned out to completely thrash my last time, and that was a pretty good feeling. Ever since I saw him at the VAS School swimming sports I'be been trying to follow in his footsteps. Daniel Bell, thanks for being such an inspiration to me and helping me to achieve my goals! You are totally awesome!

Lego Ninjago

Lego Ninjago is a type of Lego and a cartoon. I like to collect the elemental ninjas, and also the evil brainless bone warriors, and the sneaky snake creatures. I try to collect the golden weapons, the scythe of quakes, the shurikens of ice, the nun-chucks of lightning and the sword of fire to save the land of Ninjago with Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane. Kai is the Ninja with the element of Fire, and has spirit burning inside of him. Jay is the Ninja of Lightning, and often sparks confidence in the others. Zane is the mysterious one of Ice, and is able to withstand temperatures of extreme cold. And Cole, the team leader, is the Ninja of Earth, and is tough as rocks. Together they must unite to defeat the evil skeletons and snakes, and to help anyone, anywhere in danger. NINJA, GO!

The Laser

The laser generates an intense, very narrow beam of light that is being harnessed for science, technology and medicine. Theodore Mainman was the man that made the first laser operate, and he did it on the 16th of May in 1960. He made it operate at the Hughes Research labarotory in Calafornia, by shining a high power flash lamp on a ruby rod with silver coated surfaces. The Hughes Labaratory made the first public announcement In July.   Later on, scientists began to make even more kinds of lasers, including the Semiconductor Laser, which does things like scanning barcodes at supermarkets. There is also a kind of so-called "edible laser", which uses a kind of flavored gelatin, but it isn't abled to be eaten because of the dye used to colour it. One more kind of laser is also called the "drinkable laser", because it uses a generous amount of alchoholic properties. In the modern times, lasers have been made to perfection, and are commonly used in surgery or science experiments.

My Sunday Club Meet

On Sunday the 26th of August I had a swim meet. My races were 100m Backstroke, 100m Individual Medley, 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle. Right now I was speed Level 3, the lowest level. Level 2 was the next up, and only a few people manage to get to Level 1, the highest you can get. If I got one minute 35 seconds in my 100m Backstroke, I would qualify for Level 2! When it was time for the race, I pushed off as soon as the starting bleeper went off, and off I went! I powered away from the wall, and swam ahead of the opposing swimmers. I tumble-turned off the wall, 25 meters down, 75 to go. When I eventually got on the last wall, I was exhausted, but I kept going. And when I finished it paid off, because I bet my personal record by 15 seconds, got the fastest time and qualified to level up to level 2!

My next race was 100m IM (Individual Medley), and unfortunately I false-started, but the ref gave me another chance. And guess what! I got the fastest time again, but nobody is allowed to qualify, which is a shame. I later powered through 100m Breaststroke, and qualified for Level 2 again! My second to last race was 100m Freestyle, but I was two seconds off the qualifying time. My last race was 50m Freestyle, and I was in the last round for the event because I had one of the top times, like all of my other races. I came somewhere between third and sixth, and bet my PB (Personal Best) by almost two seconds!

I hope I do as awesome as that in my next swim meet!

Wilt Chamberlain: A Biography

Imagine slam-dunking the basket, the winning score, while thousands of fans have their eyes on you. You are Wilt Chamberlain, basketball legend of the 1960's.

Wilt Chamberlain was born on the 21'st August, 1936, in Philadalphia, and was named Wilten Norman Chamberlain (nicknamed Wilt). His high school was in Overbrook, and later he went to the University of Kansas, but he never really needed to graduate, because he already had enough talent to do something else, something that would make him rich, AND famous.

Wilt Chamberlain might have actually died a few times, including being attacked by pneumonia at only around 8 YEARS OLD! But, he managed to get through all that eventually. Wilt's father went by the name of William Chamberlain, and got the job of custodian, but his mother, Olivia chamberlain was a domestic worker. Olivia and William gave birth to five children, Wilt, of course, his two brothers, Oliver and Wilbur, and his sisters, Barbara and Selena.

When Wilt joined the American NBA, he started off in the Philadalphia Warriors, and played for them from 1959-1964. Then he joined the 76'ers, and played with them for four years. Then Chamberlain accompanied the LA (Los Angeles) Lakers and stayed 1968-73, 6 years, and then played with 1 or 2 more teams. Along the way, Wilt Chamberlain acquired many awards. He obtained Rookie of the Year from 1959-60, and was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) 1959-60, 1965-66, 1966-67 and 1967-68. And guess what? He got in the hall of fame in 1979!

During the Philadalphia Warriors' game against the New York Knicks, Wilt Chamberlain was a superstar! At that moment, on the 2'nd March, 1962, he scored at every opportunity, destroying the other team. And then, he came out with 100 POINTS under his belt, a new world record, he was the first man in the world to go triple digits, the big one-zero-zero. He was a hit, at that moment the biggest hit in the entire world. At that moment, his very name became legendary!

Unfortunately, Wilt Chamberlain died in 1999, due to heart failure. It was a very sad event for his family, who all lived to be older than him. Chamberlain lived to be 63 years, 2 months, one week and 5 days.

Even though he is dead, he still lives in the heart of many young basketball players, and he is still a major inspiration in the world, for anyone who wants to believe.

Wilt Chamberlain, Basketball Legend

Wilt Chamberlain was very famous in the '60s for scoring more than 100 points in ONE WHOLE GAME. He has played in at least two different teams, including moving over to play with the LA LAKERS around the time 1972. I am actually not sure if he is still alive, but if he is he is probably in his 80's, 90's or 100's.
